Manchester Airport Information
Manchester International Airport's life began as early as 1928, when Barton was chosen as the site of Manchester's new aerodrome. The Barton complex, which was completed two years later, included a control tower and a large aircraft hangar, both of which amazingly still stand today. However, it was soon realised that the airfield at Barton was too small and it would be too expensive to improve, so plans were made to build a new airport at Ringway, south of Manchester. 'Ringway Airport' was officially opened in July 1938 and in it's first year it handled nearly 7500 passengers. During the Second World War, three new runways were built, along with ten new hangars, and the airport was used as both a centre for manufacturing aircraft (Avro and Fairey Aviation), and a training facility for over 60,000 parachutists. By 1952, Manchester Ringway Airport was handling 163,000 passengers every day, and two years later it's millionth passenger since the War passed through the terminal. More recently, Manchester Airport has been a major sponsor at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. It has bought both East Midlands and Bournemouth airports and has just celebrated handling 20 million passengers in one year.
Manchester Airport parking is made easy with the seven on-site and 2 off-site car parks, offering over 14,000 spaces. In the terminals, there are 5 executive airport lounges, more than a dozen restaurants and cafes, and over fifty shops including high-street favourites such as Boots the Chemist, WHSmith and Monsoon. Cash machines are plentiful in the terminal buildings, as are Bureaux de Changes for those of you wishing to change money before or after your flight.
